Petition calls for parking revenue along Madeira Drive to be devoted to restoration of the Madeira Arches

Conservative motion passes despite Green opposition
A petition calling for parking revenue along Madeira Drive to be dedicated to the restoration of the Madeira Arches will receive further consideration, after being backed by the Conservative Group.
A Conservative proposal to take the idea forward passed, with only the Greens voting against.
Councillor Joe Miller, who brokered an agreement for a £11 million funding boost for the restoration of the Madeira Arches at this year’s Budget, pushed for the petition to receive further consideration and a detailed report will now be undertaken.
Cllr Miller said that the idea could fast-track the restoration process for Brighton’s beloved arches.
“Restoring the heritage of Madeira Drive is a priority for the Conservatives and the ideas in this petition could provide a boost for the restoration project.
“The petition was well-presented by Mr Russell Smith who made a strong case for restoring the arches, which have been neglected by this administration for too long.
“The benefit of this proposal is that residents and visitors would know that when they park on Madeira Drive they are contributing to the restoration of a unique Brighton landmark. I think this proposal would have the strong support of residents” he said.
The text of the petition, signed by 55 residents, is as follows:
“We the undersigned petition Brighton & Hove Council to lobby government for a one-off special status to use parking revenue generated on Madeira Drive to invest in the Arches restoration.”
Supporting information: The parking revenue should be used as it looks a state at the moment and valuable spaces are being lost. Once renewed and the cost recovered, revenues can be returned to the usual pot.
